Seventh Annual Symposium

Held Virtually on 09 December 2020

Overview

Owners and contractors are rapidly moving to digitalize and industrialize construction. COVID-19 is now accelerating the use of these emerging technologies.

However, the construction industry’s deep roots in craft-based production (vs. high-volume manufacturing) limit the ability for companies to fully benefit from these efforts.

PPI’s Seventh Annual Symposium brought together industry experts, academics and thought leaders to discuss how to effectively implement and benefit from the digitalization and industrialization of construction.

Keynote

Why Do We Make the Choices We Make?
The Neuroscience of Voluntary Action and Decision-Making

Anil Seth, University of Sussex

Dr. Seth is a professor of Cognitive and Computational Neuroscience at the University of Sussex and founding co-director of the Sackler Centre for Consciousness Science in the UK.

Though advancements in methods and technologies can be of value, often times potential benefactors are slow to adopt. People have to decide to do things differently, yet sometimes the decisions we make are not the best for our organizations – or even for ourselves. How do we make the choices we make, and what does it mean to make a ‘choice’ at all?

Neuroscientist Anil Seth revealed what the latest research has to say about voluntary action and decision making, shedding light on everything from what ‘free will’ really means to the key roles that emotions and confidence play in decision making, both individually and in groups. He painted a picture of free will as a distinctive kind of ‘perception’, and he explained why experiences of free will exist not to drive actions in the here-and-now, but to help us learn how to do things better in the future.

Themes

THEME 1
How Do Leading Companies Implement And Benefit From Project Production Management?

In 2019, the Construction User’s Roundtable magazine “The Voice” proposed Project Production Management is one of three emerging trends that will improve the delivery of capital projects. But what is Project Production Management, who is using it and what benefits are they getting?

Through presentation of several company case studies, practitioners in the field of Project Production Management will present and discuss why they adopted PPM, how they deployed it, what benefit they received and what they learned through the process.

THEME 2
Digitalization Of Construction – What Does It Mean and How to Do It

Enabled by increased computational power and faster network speed, digital technology such as artificial intelligence (AI), autonomous / robotics, edge computing, internet of things (IoT) and even the emergence of quantum computing will change life as we know it today.

But how can and will digital technology change how capital projects are delivered? During this session experts representing both the digital sector as well as the engineering and construction industry will present how construction can leverage digital technology to improve project outcomes.

THEME 3
What Challenges Does Industrialization Of Construction Present And How To Address Them

To reduce cost and schedule duration along with address a potential shortage in skilled workers, owners and contractors are looking to industrialize construction. This includes standardization of products, modularization, moving work offsite including the use of robotics and other high-volume manufacturing methods.

Deeply rooted in craft production, the construction industry operates and is structured much differently than high-volume manufacturing sectors such as automotive, consumer electronics, etc. That being said, high-volume frameworks are proven to improve project outcomes.

Attendees in this session will explore how methods and technologies from high volume manufacturing can effectively be applied to the delivery of capital projects.
