Overview

The panel discussion is about the Project of the Future session and Intelligent Production. Intelligent Production is a system that is able to self-organize and self-optimize. It builds on the capabilities of IoT sensors and wireless networks to collect data and quickly optimize the production system, controlling it without the need for manual decision-making. The panelists discuss the blend between mechanical engineering, robotics, artificial intelligence, and construction and how it’s going to change the traditional trade contractors’ job. The project of the future looks like having a better understanding and transparency of the process of construction from start to end, making decisions based on data and facts, and not on feel.

Speakers

Roberto J. Arbulu
Strategic Project Solutions, Inc.

Roberto Arbulu is Senior Vice President of Technical Services for Strategic Project Solutions. He has more than twenty years of experience in the delivery and optimization of energy, industrial, technology, and infrastructure capital projects and has worked with numerous owner operators and service providers across North America, South America, Europe, Australia, Asia and the Middle East. He is the author of technical publications in journals and conference proceedings that focus on project production system optimization, control, and project supply chains including the application of methods such as Project Production Management and Virtual Design & Construction (VDC).

For many years, Roberto has participated as a VDC instructor and technical advisor at Stanford University’s Center for Integrated Facility Engineering. He is a member of the Gulf Downstream Association (GDA)’s Project Management Technical Committee and also supports Project Production Institute (PPI) as an Instructor for professional certification programs.

Roberto earned a Civil Engineering Degree from Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. He has a Master of Engineering Degree in Construction Engineering & Management and a Certificate in Management of Technology from the University of California, Berkeley.

Wayne Crabtree
Chevron (Ret.)

Wayne Crabtree recently retired from Chevron, where he was the CI Advisor of the Chevron Project Management System (CPMS) for Chevron PRC. He was responsible for CPMS Knowledge Management; CPMS Continuous Learning System; and the development and application of continuous improvement methodologies on Major Capital Projects.

He has over 30 years of experience in project management and organizational development within the industrial and manufacturing business sector. For the first half of his career Crabtree owned and operated businesses that specialized in civil/structural construction and environmental remediation. During this time he was engaged in the successive waves of Total Quality Management, Value Engineering, Continuous Improvement, ISO 9001, Team Empowerment, and Lean Sigma. These methodologies were applied to his own businesses and helped shape his own understanding of how they may be applied within wider corporate settings.

Crabtree is currently focused on the integration of the theory and principles of Project Production Management into the Chevron Project Delivery Model. This effort is in support of Chevron’s increased interest to be more in control of the design and execution of work on their Major Capital Projects.

Crabtree is a Chevron Certified Lean Sigma Black Belt and maintains a Project Management Professional (PMP) certification through the Project Management Institute and has a Master’s degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Six Sigma.

Edward S. Pound

Pound brings more than thirty years of experience in product development, heavy fabrication, high volume manufacturing, construction and supply chain management.

As a recognized pioneer in the development and application of Operations Science including being the lead author of Factory Physics for Managers, he has advised executives and managers in aerospace, construction, electronics, pharmaceuticals, cloud infrastructure development, consumer retail, medical devices, healthcare and engineer-to-order capital equipment.

Pound earned an MBA from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University, a Master of Engineering Management degree from Robert R. McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science at Northwestern University, and Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Alabama.

Craig Evans
Craig Evans
Chevron

Craig Evans is currently the Senior Advisor, Operations Science for Chevrons Capital Projects function supporting all aspects of operations science application within Chevron’s global Capital Projects portfolio and function.

Previously Craig was the Project Production Performance Manager at Chevron Project Resources Company (PRC), deployed to the Future Growth and Wellhead Pressure Maintenance Project in Kazakhstan. Craig has spent 30 years in Chevron’s capital projects organization and has held a variety of roles.

Craig has been responsible for Chevron’s implementation of project production management (PPM) on the Future Growth and Wellhead Pressure Maintenance Project. Prior to this, Craig was responsible for deployment of Chevron’s project management system across the portfolio of major capital projects in Europe, Eurasia and the Middle East.

He has held numerous technical and leadership positions across Chevron’s upstream enterprise including; Business Manager for an integrated offshore gas development, pipeline and onshore power plant; Business Manager for a grassroots LNG Project and Deputy Project Director for Chevron’s Europe, Eurasia and Middle East. Craig holds a Master of Business Administration from Deakin University and recently completed an Artificial Intelligent program at the University of Oxford, Saïd Business School.

David McKay
David McKay
Hess (ret.)

David “Dave” McKay recently retired as Vice President, Well Factory Execution– Bakken, for Hess Corporation, a global independent energy company engaged in the exploration and production of crude oil and natural gas.

In this role, McKay applied lean philosophy to develop a well factory assembly line, from the initial scoping of wells through drilling and hydraulic fracturing to the final handover to production.

McKay joined Hess in 2010 as Director, Bakken Project, with primary responsibility for managing Hess’ operations in North Dakota.

Prior to joining Hess, McKay spent 13 years at Aera Energy LLC with the company’s Belridge asset as Vice President of Operations, Engineering Manager, and Development Manager. He was responsible for building the capabilities of the asset’s leadership and employees, and applying lean operating principles at all levels of the organization to reduce waste and improve productivity. Early in his career, he spent 16 years in various production and operations roles with Mobil Oil Corporation in Oklahoma and California.

McKay holds a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of Colorado, Denver.
